1. Choose the right location of the router

Always keep the router in the middle of the house, in an open space. If you keep the router in a corner, behind a wall or in an iron cupboard, the signal will become weak.

  • Place it high (like on a shelf)

  • Keep away from walls

  • keep away from metal objects

2. Disconnect unnecessary devices

The more devices you have connected to Wi-Fi, the slower the internet will be. So disconnect those devices that are not in use.

  • Old mobile or tablet which is not in use

  • Smart home devices that are not running properly

  • Guest devices connected to Wi-Fi

3. Restart the router

Sometimes the router has been running for a long time, which makes it slow. Restarting it clears the cache memory and can increase the speed.

  • Turn off the router for 30 seconds

  • Then turn it back on and check

4. Replace the old router

If your router is 3-4 years old, it cannot properly support today's high-speed internet. Get a new Dual Band or Wi-Fi 6 router .

  • Choose models from good brands like TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link

  • Dual Band routers have both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, which provide higher speeds

5. Change your Wi-Fi channel

If you live in an apartment or flat, sometimes the nearby Wi-Fi networks are on the same channel, which causes interference.

  • Change the channel in your router settings

  • Turn on “Auto Channel Selection”

  • With the help of some apps like WiFi Analyzer, you can choose less crowded channels

6. Update the firmware

It is also important to update the router's firmware, i.e. its software, so that the performance is better and there are no bugs.

  • Check for the latest firmware on the router brand's website

  • Or update from the router's admin panel

7. Set a password and protect your Wi-Fi from theft

If your Wi-Fi does not have a password or it is very simple, anyone can misuse it. This reduces the speed.

  • Set up WPA2 or WPA3 security

  • Set a strong password (eg – MyWiFi@2025)

  • Check for and block unknown devices

8. Close Background Apps

Many times the apps in our devices are consuming data in the background, due to which the Wi-Fi starts feeling slow.

  • turn off background data on mobile

  • Stop unnecessary downloads or updates in laptop

  • Scan with antivirus or firewall

9. Check Internet Speed

It is possible that you are getting slow speed from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  • Check the speed with Speedtest.net or fast.com

  • If you are repeatedly getting low speed then contact your ISP

  • Compare your plan's speed and your actual speed

10. Install a Wi-Fi Repeater or Range Extender

If your house is big and Wi-Fi is not reaching every corner, then you can use a Wi-Fi Repeater.

  • This device amplifies the router's signal

  • This will give you a good signal in every part of the house

  • Repeaters from brands like TP-Link, Mi and Netgear are good

11. Test at different times of the day

Sometimes the network becomes slow during peak time (7 pm to 10 pm) because everyone is surfing the internet at that time.

  • Avoid heavy downloads or video streaming at such times

  • Do important work during the day when the network is less used

12. Talk to your ISP or upgrade your plan

If you have only 10 Mbps internet and 4-5 people in the house are using YouTube, Netflix, Zoom simultaneously, then it is common to have slow Wi-Fi.

  • Choose 50 Mbps or 100 Mbps plan

  • Fiber Internet is the fastest and most reliable

  • Brands like BSNL, Jio Fiber, Airtel Xstream, Excitel are good options

Conclusion

Slow Wi-Fi is a common problem but its solution is also very easy. First of all, you have to find out where the problem is - in your device, in the router or in the internet service. Then adopt the above mentioned measures and gradually you will start seeing a difference in your speed.

  • Put the router in the right place

  • Disconnect old devices

  • Use a strong password

  • Keep the router updated

  • Upgrade the router if needed

If you have done all this and still the speed is slow, then talk to the ISP and switch to a better plan.
